Ciutadella de Menorca has a long history reflected in its medieval architecture and Moorish buildings, and has become one of the island’s more lively regions. The sunlight cast across the town’s medieval palaces, fortresses and churches form a pleasing contrast to the energetic live music and late night bars and clubs that attract both visitors and locals after the sun has set.
Although the port town itself does not have a beach, there are plenty to be enjoyed only a mile or two along the coast – however, with a culture as richly rewarding as that to be found in Ciutadella, there are numerous other ways to spend a disabled-friendly holiday that do not necessarily involve lounging endlessly on the sand.
The city is a religious centre, and home to many beautiful landmarks that offer both beauty from a distance and places to explore up close. The Convent of Santa Clara, the Cloister of the Church of Socors, and the Palace of Olives are all stunning ancestral homes, while the Bastio de Sa Font is one of five fortifications that made up part of the old walls that once surrounded the city.
And when you have drunk your fill of glorious architecture, it will almost certainly be time to sample Ciutadella’s famously delicious Balearic cuisine – making sure to sample the sensational lobster casserole!
