Ever-popular with couples and families alike and only a short flight away from the UK, Portugal makes a fantastic accessible holiday destination. There are few beach holidays that can rival a disabled holiday in the Algarve region, with its blessed warm weather that lasts the whole year round and its golden swathes of sandy coastline.

Portuguese scenery is tranquillity incarnated.  The calm, temperate ocean – and accessible beaches at resorts like Vilamoura and Albufeira, with facilities like ramps and amphibious chairs - offer visitors the chance to bathe and swim while the view from the coast of the close-by near-deserted islands is both soothing and beautiful.  Portugal’s mountains are a commanding yet calming presence, standing as a towering, benevolent backdrop to the cities and towns that blanket the landscape.

The Algarve retains many of its traditions and much of its architecture from centuries past, making it a great accessible getaway for history buffs who also adore the sun. The country’s architecture runs from pre-Roman times through a grand range of styles that include Roman, Gothic and Renaissance all the way to modern times.

Traditional local food is often reasonably priced and quite exquisite. Seafood and fish are the most common ingredients in Portuguese cuisine and many restaurants and bars favour serving seafood, with seafood tapas being a speciality, although other options are, of course, available.
