On the south eastern Mediterranean coast of Spain, bordered by the Costa Blanca and the Costa Almeria, lies the Costa Calida, aka, Warm Coast.  The resort was given this name due to its consistently comfortable climate throughout the year, which has around 315 annual days of sun.

The resort is seen very much as “up and coming” and boasts over 150 miles of coastline, much of which is backed by pine forests and humped dunes.  As well as being perfect places to lounge and revel in sunshine, the beaches are often well served by bars, cafes and restaurants overlooking the temperate and crystalline ocean.

The landscape of the Costa Calida is fertile and green, often producing an array of fresh fruit and vegetables to be prepared alongside game, farmed meat and the abundant seafood fished from the Mar Menor and the Mediterranean.  These factors help to keep the cuisine varied, while often featuring rice in its savoury dishes.  These include the “arroz y conejo” (rice with rabbit), “arroz y costillejas” (rice and ribs), and “arroz mariner” (seafood rice).  The locally sourced king prawns are particularly adored, and the “huevas de mujol” is a prized type of caviar.

The capital city, Murcia, is abundant with museums and attractions, including the Catedral de Santa Maria and the Museo Salizillo.  To the north east there is Fortuna, a well-known spa town replete with venues to immerse yourself in health treatments, hydrotherapy and beauty treatments.

The Costa Calida’s nightlife is also a joy, offering everything from low-key pleasures such as bingo to more energetic, lively flamenco shows.

With so much to do and explore, it’s little wonder that the Costa Calida is gaining popularity, and may soon rival that of the Costa Blanca and Costa Brava in both mainstream and accessible tourism.
